Impact of Covid-19 on MTT-Sat Challenge — Update July 2nd

We try to keep the impact of Covid-19 on MTT-Sat Challenge as small as possible. The challenge is on track and will launch phase II. Further information and the call for proposals can be found here. We are aware that daily life changed around the world. This also affects universities. Many universities reduced their programs for students. To cope with those circumstances, we decided to postpone the deadline for proposal submission once more to July 15th, 2023 in order to allow most groups to submit their great ideas. The schedule has been adapted accordingly.

The MTT-Sat Challenge is a worldwide competition for teams of undergraduate and graduate students to design and build radio frequency (RF) and microwave hardware for small satellites.

The most promising designs will undergo space environmental qualification testing and will be incorporated in a cubesat, which will be launched into orbit (in case MTT-Sat Challenge secures enough funding and a participation in cubesat projects).

The main goal of the MTT-Sat Challenge is to advance space RF and microwave education, inspire students to pursue science and engineering education and careers, and prepare tomorrow's leaders with the interdisciplinary teamwork skills, which are necessary for success. The MTT-Sat Challenge is managed by the IEEE Microwave Theory & Techniques Society (IEEE MTT-S), a federally-incorporated not-for-profit organization, with additional experts and advisors in the field.

For getting involved, you do not need to have approved space hardware; a good and scientific profound idea is sufficient.

Phases

The MTT-Sat Challenge is divided into several phases spanning over all technology readiness levels (TRLs).

  3. Call for Demonstrators (TRL 4-5)
  4. Call for Flight Hardware (TRL 6)
TRLs are a set of metrics that enable the assessment of the maturity of a particular technology and the consistent comparison of maturity between different types of technology (see for example European Space Agency's TRL handbook). The planned schedule for this challenge is shown below. The program is intended to run over four academic years, starting in June 2023. You can enter the MTT-Sat Challenge at every single phase, just submit your proposal by the deadline.

Getting involved

There is no fee to enter a team into the Challenge. Your team prepares a proposal according to the template published below. Please submit your proposal before the deadline to Microsoft Conference Management Toolkit (CMT). After submission, the review committee will judge on your ideas and select the most promising ideas from all submissions.

The proposals are due noe on July 15. The review phase has been shortend. We expect a start of the projects mid to end of August which is a delay of 4 to 6 weeks. For the second phase, IEEE MTT-Sat Challenge is calling for proof of concepts. Please prepare a proposal based on the template provided below. Specific information on the Call for Proof of Concepts can also be found in the documents listed below. The deadline for submission is June, 15th, 2023, 11 pm (Hawaii Standard Time, HST). Please upload your proposal via Microsoft CMT. The review of the first phase is scheduled for July/August 2023. You will be notified by end of August, if your proposal is accepted. Follow-up proposals for the Call for Proof of Concepts are due in May, 2021. You will find more information on the Call for Demonstrators here as soon as we open up the call.
